Autumn mushroom hunting. Too many varieties?

This year’s mushroom season is slowly coming to an end and even though it started rather late it was pretty long. Even now in November, you can still go to the forest and find good mushrooms. In the following lines, we shall tell you what mushrooms grow until the end of October and even at the beginning of November. Check the pictures below showing what we found this late in the season. And we managed to find quiet a bunch.

Plenty of Scarletina Bolete

Although the scarletina bolete grows earlier, we found several of them right from the start and very nice pieces too! We were only collecting mushrooms for drying, so we left them in the forest. If the conditions are right, they may grow even more next year. They certainly look beautiful.

The Blusher

Yes, the blusher. You do not see blushers often in late autumn, but we found few of them at the end of October and they were really beautiful. We made an excellent scrambled eggs and mushrooms dish.

The Honey Fungus (Armillaria)

Huge numbers of them indeed as you can see it in the picture but the vast majority were too old and no longer edible. Only small honey fungus taste good. Old ones are stiff and chewy.

The Cloud funnel (Clitocybe nebularis)

Also plenty of them. Even now in November, we saw large circles of these little mushrooms growing happily among fallen leaves. Young mushrooms are usually pickled in vinegar, but old ones are not good. If there is a plenty of better mushrooms you have no reason to collect them.

The Red Cracking Bolete

This mushroom is quite popular and grows in large quantities andthis time it was no different. Those young pieces looked very nice and we took few of them for pickling in vinegar.

The famous Cep or Porcini Mushroom

There was no shortage of them either, but many were overgrown. We found them in a low spruce forest where no one was before us. Obviously. The terrain was pretty hard…

The Parasol Mushroom

You could not miss these beauties and we found few of them too. We took them and did the traditional thing. Breaded them and fried them in butter. A phenomenal snack and probably the last one this year.

The Toadstool

Sure we do not collect toadstools but they are great for various tinctures, right? Still, it was a magnificent sight. See for yourself.
