Do you have allergies but want to get a dog anyway?
The number of people suffering from various allergies is increasing every year however, even if you are allergic to dogs, it does not necessarily mean that you cannot own a dog. In fact, you may not be allergic directly to dog’s hair as most people think. The main cause of problems related to allergic reactions is albumin, which is a protein found in dog saliva and urine. This protein sticks to dead skin cells and creates dandruff. When a person strokes a dog, they have direct contact with this allergen and this activates an allergic reaction.
How to recognize an allergy?
You can probably tell that you are allergic to certain things by the symptoms you experience. The most common symptoms include sneezing, watery eyes, a runny nose and itching. If you experience these symptoms after you’ve been in a contact with a dog, it is very likely that the dog is to blame. If you suspect that you suffer from an allergy, see your doctor who will perform an allergy test to find out exactly what you are allergic to.
Do you want a dog despite your allergy?
The good news is that you do not have to give up the idea of owning a dog. You just need to choose the right breed. There are breeds you can get and be ok. These breeds do not have the so-called undercoat and therefore these breeds will not cause an allergic reaction in humans. Further, these dogs lose much less hair and therefore there is much less skin shedding. After being in contact with these dogs, people usually have only mild or no allergy reaction. Another good news is that there is a number of companies developing a vaccine that should help people with certain types of allergies.
Poodle
Poodle is a hypoallergenic dog, meaning it should not cause any allergic reactions. It is an energetic and very intelligent dog, but it definitely needs an owner who is committed to sporting activities.Poodle has a beautiful wavy coat but it needs to be taken care of regularly.
Irish Water Spaniel
Also this breed needs a very active owner because it loves exercise. Active athletes would be best owners… It is a pretty large dog, weighing up to 30 kg, so you should have a garden and a house if you want this breed. Irish Water Spaniel has a dark brown, quite thick and waterproof coat, which unlike poodle’s coat, does not require special care.
Schnauzer
This breed is very popular and looks very nice and cute. Schnauzers are also very social animals, so if you spend most of your time away from home, do not get this dog. Schnauzer has a double coat. The first is made up of soft hair, the second is thick and curly. If you suffer from allergies you should be ok with this breed, but make sure to take a regular care of the fur.
