Frequent mistakes preventing your roses from blooming

Roses can be really tricky. Sometimes you take care of them well but they refuse to bloom while your lazy neighbour does not give a damn and has beautiful roses each year… So, what is going on here?

Roses do not bloom if you plant them too deep

Roses should not be planted deeper than 5-10 cm. If you fail to follow this rule your roses will have hard time flowering.

Fertilization may be another problem

In addition to deep planting, fertilization could be another reason why your roses do not want to bloom. Excess of nutrients can damage the root system and a failure to bloom. This can happen even if you use natural fertilizers, such coffee grounds.

Another mistake is if you fertilize too early (March) or too late (September, October). The last fertilization should be done in July and after that you need to let your roses rest.

Watering mistakes

Roses do not like too dry soil, but too much water is not good either. When you water, aim well. Do not water green parts above the ground. A big mistake is to water roses with a garden hose especially, on hot days. Drops of water can burn leaves and cause damage and therefore increase the risk of infection. Surprisingly, watering is totally different at the beginning. Roots should be placed in a container with water for several hours before planting.

Incorrect pruning is another problem

Pruning is not that difficult but still many people do it wrong or even ignore it completely. Correct pruning and timing (usually in spring) depends on the variety you grow. Incorrect pruning can completely destroy rose bush or prevent it from flowering. Always prune shoots using a sharp and disinfected knife or tool to prevent transmission of diseases.
