The garden literally demands proper care in April. The weather is usually beautiful outside, so it’s definitely worth spending a little time on it. Watering is a particularly hot topic in the spring. Plants undoubtedly need it, but they should be watered correctly and in moderation. That’s why we’ll take a much closer look at april watering in the following paragraphs. As you’ll see for yourself, it’s often better to leave the watering can or hose alone.

What makes april watering so tricky?

Several factors. First and foremost, it’s important to note that the soil warms up much more slowly in April than in the summer months. As a result, water evaporates from the lower soil layers quite slowly. In addition, low nighttime temperatures further contribute to the soil drying out. Even if the soil looks dry, it is often actually waterlogged, which is bad for plants and slows their growth.

When is watering worthwhile?

Watering in april makes sense primarily when sowing plants in relatively dry soil. If windy and dry weather persists for an extended period, watering is definitely necessary, and the plants cannot do without it. Newly planted seedlings also deserve watering. The water should penetrate deeply to the roots.

Sometimes it’s best to skip the watering can

Undoubtedly. If the soil beneath the surface is moist, we definitely don’t reach for the watering can. It’s simply unnecessary. Likewise, we don’t water after rain, even if the sun is shining brightly and we think the plants need extra moisture. We definitely shouldn’t water in the evening before a cold night. Cold water on cold soil is the worst combination.

Tip: Lettuce certainly deserves water too. Growing it in April is a tradition.

How to water properly

It’s quite simple. We should water in the morning or early afternoon. It’s definitely necessary to use settled water, not water straight from the tap. We should direct the water toward the roots, not the leaves and green parts of the plants. Be careful not to mist the surface of the plants too often. In spring, this is generally undesirable. One thorough watering is better than three or four small ones.
