Have you already fertilized your fruit trees in your garden or orchard? If not, it’s definitely worth considering. In the following paragraphs, we’ll therefore focus on fertilizing fruit trees with urea. It’s certainly one of the traditional fertilizers that can help both with tree growth and with their resistance to fungal diseases. Urea is a versatile fertilizer with comprehensive effects. Although it acts relatively slowly compared to nitrates and ammonium salts, it’s a reliable choice.

Granules or solution?

Urea is available on the market in two basic forms. The classic form is a solution, but it can also be purchased as granules. Nitrogen is probably the most important component of urea. Plants must have the right amount of this element. If there is too little nitrogen, trees become weaker and develop thin leaves that turn yellow. Leaves may even begin to fall as early as August. Conversely, an excess of nitrogen in trees results in deep green leaves even some time after the growing season ends. In this case, the fruits are large but lack flavor. Furthermore, the plant loses some of its resistance to disease.

When and how to apply urea spray in the fall

Ideally, of course, after all the fruit has been harvested. However, the trees should still have their leaves when we begin spraying. If we were to spray them only after the leaves have fallen, we would destroy only 50% of the fungal spores. This way, we can eliminate up to 90%. We typically use a 5% solution. For every 10 liters of water, use 500 g of urea. The solution should be applied to all parts of the tree. Of course, you can also spray fallen leaves on the ground as a preventive measure. Among other things, the solution is particularly effective against scab.

Tip: Scab is a problem. How do you deal with it?

Spring spraying is also important

Don’t forget about this. It’s crucial for crop quality. However, if the temperature exceeds 10 °C in February, it’s worth spraying the area around fruit trees with a urea solution.

Be careful when spraying

Definitely, because urea can be dangerous. Protective gloves, safety goggles, and full-body protective clothing are essential.
