Fall Fertilization of Fruit Trees. Go with Organic Fertilizers
Fall is already in full swing. That’s another reason why it’s worth keeping your fruit trees in mind. Everyone wants a great harvest next year. If you give them a little help, you’ll likely be rewarded with delicious, sweet fruit. In the following paragraphs, we’ll take a detailed look at fall fertilization of fruit trees. This is definitely something that shouldn’t be overlooked. There are several options to choose from. Trees simply need the right nutrients.
Give your trees nutrients
After the season, fruit trees are naturally depleted. This is no surprise, since they’ve usually produced a relatively large amount of fruit. If the trees are provided with nutrients, they’ll be much better able to survive the winter. Various nitrogen-based fertilizers are ideal. Nitrogen strengthens the plant tissue and helps the trees build up enough strength for the winter.
When to fertilize fruit trees?
You can start right after the harvest, even now in October. Otherwise, you can fertilize fruit trees without any problems until about 14 days before the first frosts. After that, fertilizing fruit trees is no longer recommended.

In addition to nitrogen, trees also need potassium
Trees that lack sufficient potassium are generally much less winter-hardy. Young trees and crops such as potatoes also need it. Especially in densely planted areas with trees and potatoes nearby, it’s important to ensure an adequate supply of this element. Other essential elements include magnesium and phosphorus.

Watch out for calcium deficiency
This element is also very important. Just look at some fruit trees where calcium deficiency becomes apparent. Take the walnut tree, for example—it won’t produce walnuts because the shells don’t develop properly. Dolomitic limestone containing magnesium is ideal for fertilization.
Opt for organic fertilizers
After harvest, it’s worth loosening the soil and adding organic fertilizers. Barnyard manure is excellent for this purpose. Otherwise, chicken manure or horse manure are also good options. You can choose either the traditional or granulated form.
