A bountiful harvest of blueberries and cranberries. They require specific care
Having various shrubs in your garden that yield delicious, sweet berries packed with vitamins throughout the season is definitely worth it. Canadian blueberries and cranberries are the classics in our gardens. Both plants are quite specific in terms of cultivation. That is why it pays to take a closer look at them. Otherwise, we may not get the harvest we’re hoping for. These are definitely not shrubs like gooseberries or currants, which are virtually maintenance-free.
Soil requirements are similar
Canadian blueberries and their requirements
Let’s start with Canadian blueberries. These form taller shrubs that can easily reach 2 meters in height. Canadian blueberries require a distinctly acidic soil with a pH range of 3.5 to 5.5. In addition, Canadian blueberries require:
– a sunny location,
– regular watering,
– they cannot tolerate drought.
As for the growing medium, always use peat moss or a substrate specifically designed for Canadian blueberries. Coniferous leaf litter is also excellent. Without acidic soil, they produce virtually no fruit.

Cranberries are similar
Unlike Canadian blueberries, cranberries are relatively low shrubs that tend to creep along the ground. The berries are also much smaller and more tart. They require acidic soil just like Canadian blueberries. However, they can tolerate longer dry spells better. They can be grown alongside blueberries.
Proper planting as a foundation
Dig a hole about 50 cm deep. Then fill it with acidic soil, plant the blueberries or cranberries, and mulch with sawdust or bark. This way, you can create an entire acidic garden bed.
Year-round care is important
Absolutely. You should definitely prune older branches on Canadian blueberries every 3 to 4 years. Fertilizing with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants is also excellent. We mustn’t forget to provide enough water either. With cranberries, we avoid pruning; it’s enough to remove old and dead plant parts.

Watch out for diseases
A classic issue with blueberries is yellowing leaves due to incorrect pH. Otherwise, fungi can also appear from overwatering the plants. Cranberries are very hardy; they just can’t tolerate the wrong soil.
