The most common gardening mistakes in March: They will slow down the entire season
March is the month when many gardeners are literally eager to get out into the garden and start doing all sorts of things. This is hardly surprising, as the sun is shining, it is relatively warm, and being outdoors is incredibly appealing. Unfortunately, however, in our eagerness, we often make decisions that can be very bad. Mistakes are made that don’t show up immediately but will linger throughout the season. Slowly and insidiously. The impact of these mistakes is usually noticeable even in the summer. We’ll take a closer look at them.
Working in wet soil
A very unpleasant classic and the most common mistake that can be made. The soil is often literally soaked with water after winter. It is also very cold and fragile. Any intervention leads to the gradual disappearance of air from the soil, making it even more compact and making it more difficult for water to drain away. The substrate simply settles, which is a big problem. An impermeable layer is created and plants find it difficult to take root.

Overgrown seedlings are useless
Problems can also arise with seedlings. They often stretch and practically overgrow. This happens because the days are getting longer and the seedlings cannot yet be planted outside. That is why it is worth sowing crops from which seedlings are to be grown in good time and giving them plenty of light and moisture. If seedlings grow too tall, they will not develop a sufficient root system and will then not tolerate transplanting well. They will not grow for a long time and often will not even have time to develop fruit.
Too much fertilizer
If we fertilize and the plants don’t grow, it’s pointless.
Fertilizing in March does not bring many benefits. At this time of year, nutrients are generally washed into the lower layers and the microbial life of the soil is disrupted. Plants are simply unable to make full use of the nutrients. Heavier fertilization must come during the active growth phase.
We want to get everything done quickly
This is quite a big problem. Many gardeners want to have everything done in March. This is unnecessary, as we should work in harmony with the natural rhythm of the soil. Garden beds should not be overworked, and restraint and careful consideration often pay off.
FAQ – Frequently asked questions about March mistakes
How do mistakes relate to the soil itself?
We need to recognize soil that is mature.
It does not stick to your hands or feet.
Why do seedlings tend to overgrow?
Because they lack space and a natural environment.
Why not fertilize crops yet?
Because the fertilizer will not be effective and will go into the lower layers of the soil.
