Attract hedgehogs to your garden: you’ll get rid of slugs and other pests

Hedgehog

Snails and other pests in the form of annoying insects can spoil the joy of our gardens, which take a lot of hard work and time to maintain. You are probably already thinking about what weapons to use against these uninvited guests this year. How about attracting their natural enemy to your garden? That enemy is none other than the hedgehog. If you create optimal conditions for them to stay, they will reward you accordingly.

Hedgehogs need a natural refuge

These small mammals are mainly insectivores, but they also enjoy eating slugs. They consume as much food per day as they weigh themselves. The ideal shelter for them is a quiet place where they can rest undisturbed during the day. They are literally attracted to dark corners in the form of piles of leaves, wood, or branches. You can even buy special houses for hedgehogs on the internet or in specialized stores. If you decide to welcome a hedgehog onto your property to help you with pest control, do not use any chemical pesticides or poisons for slugs or small rodents in your garden.

How to reward hedgehogs?

Although they find most of their food themselves, it is a good idea to give hedgehogs a little extra so that they feel really comfortable in your garden. You can buy special hedgehog pellets, which you can regularly sprinkle in their hiding places. You can also use cat food. Don’t forget to refill their water bowl regularly. This is especially important on hot summer days. Never give hedgehogs milk, as they have trouble digesting it.

Remove dangerous obstacles

Water areas such as swimming pools, ponds, or lakes are a major hazard for hedgehogs. There is a risk that they will drown in them. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the water has a gentle slope so that the hedgehog can safely get back into the garden. You can also place branches here, which can serve as a natural float if it does get into the water.

Hedgehog season is from spring to fall. Since they hibernate in winter, prepare a suitable shelter for them in the fall so that they will return to your garden in the spring.
