How to make rose cuttings

Roses

Do you have a beautiful rose bush at home and you would love to propagate it and at the same time you are wondering when is the right time to do so? Rose propagation is not difficult, but you have to do it at the right time and you need to apply the right technique. If you do everything right, you will create a beautiful foundation for a new rose bush.

Roses require proper care at the end of summer. If you notice signs of disease(such as rust or powdery mildew), you need to take an immediate action and spray. You also need to remove dry flowers and dead branches. This will force the bush to stop creating fruits and to stay strong. Now is also the right time for the last dose of fertilizer and additional watering is necessary.

Making rose cuttings

New shoots mature at the end of summer so, at this time you have a great opportunity to make cuttings. There are several ways to that but use the one that works best for you. Here is one proven technique. Cut mature branches that have not bloomed yet into smaller pieces. Each piece should have two to three pairs of leaves. Cut the ends at an angle (45 degrees) and soak them in a powdered growth stimulator, if you have one. When done, push cuttings into soil, water lightly and cover with a large glass (cucumber jar for example). This will create a mini-greenhouse, and you do not have to worry about them until spring. You may water cuttings lightly from time to time. Otherwise, do not lift the cover. Leave cuttings alone. Only remove the cover in spring, when you want cuttings to get accustomed to the outdoor temperature.

At the beginning, only remove the cover for a few minutes and gradually increasing the time. You will also see whether cuttings have taken root not. You can start fertilizing from mid-summer.

When you should not make cuttings

If your roses have been affected by rust (or you suspect that they could be attacked, even if do not see symptoms yet), do not take cuttings in late summer. If you do, the cuttings will have a very hard time to take root. If that is the scenario, make cuttings in the spring and apply the necessary treatment before planting.
