Spending a quality time with your dog is great but sometimes you must deal with serious issues. One of the worst problems is when your dog rejects food and water. Yes, this may be a temporary problem (just like humans, dogs can suffer from nausea for several days and do not feel like eating or drinking anything), but if this behaviour persists, it may be a sign of a serious illness. There is no reason to panic and call your vet, but you should keep a close eye on your pet.

Nausea

There may be several reasons why your dog is not eating. The most common reason is that you have given your dog a new type of food and he does not like it. If that is the case, just go back to the feed your dog liked before. A dog’s loss of appetite may also be the result of overeating or your dog has eaten something bad, which is also common. You need to be careful and not let your dog lick and chew everything he finds. If your dog does not eat or drink for one day only, you should not worry but watch for other symptoms which may indicate more serious problem.

Stress

Another reason why your dog may be refusing feed is stress. Stress is usually caused by a change in the environment, if the owner leaves for a while, or if a new family member arrives. If your dog suffers from stress he may be avoiding contact with people or may insists on being with you at all times. These situations are difficult but dogs are usually able to deal with it after some time. If such “hunger strike” lasts a long time, you must visit a veterinarian.

Other possible causes

If your dog does not eat for several days you need to take him to a vet. There may be underlying issues and most likely you will not be able to detect them. Your dog may have problems with teeth, respiratory system, irritation of the mucous membranes, throat and oesophagus. A veterinarian will diagnose these issues and suggest treatment. You may recognize these symptoms if your dog comes to his bowl and tries to eat, but stops eating due to pain. Other more serious issues are usually related to the digestive system, infections or diseases of internal organs, pain or even cancer.

Why your dog does not drink?

There are many reasons why your dog does not eat, but there are even more reasons why dog does not want to drink. Lack of liquids will eventually lead to poor skin or gum health. Dehydration makes dogs more susceptible to illness. If your dog does not want to drink, you should definitely see a vet. It it important that your dog gets enough fluids. However, do not use forceful methods like using a syringe to squirt water in his mouth.This can make it even worse. Instead, try adding water or broth to dog food. If your dog likes playing in water and the weather is good, you can get him to drink water by playing in water.
