You’re throwing away potato peelings. What a shame – this chef’s trick proves otherwise

Potatoes

Peeling potatoes is one of those traditional tasks we simply can’t do without in the kitchen. It’s hardly surprising. Most of the time, we simply scrape the potatoes and then use them. The peelings end up on the compost heap or, worse still, in the bin. In any case, it’s a shame, as they can still be put to good use – and quite effectively at that. We’ve got a chef’s trick for you that’s definitely worth a try, at the very least. We’ll also look at other uses for potato peelings.

The chef’s trick is worth a try

Provided the skins aren’t particularly old or full of sprouts, they can certainly be put to good use. So, what will we need to prepare the skins? Specifically, you’ll need:

– potato skins,

– dried red chilli,

– a pinch of salt,

– thyme,

– olive oil,

– other herbs to taste.

The method is quite simple and quick

First of all, we need to thoroughly clean the peelings of any dirt. Then we place them in a bowl, mix them with the spices and salt, and finally add the olive oil. Mix everything together thoroughly and then place in a preheated oven. The oven should be set to 200 degrees Celsius. Bake the peelings for a few minutes and you’re done. This delicacy is definitely worth serving for dinner. What’s more, it takes just a few minutes to prepare and requires minimal effort.

Peelings as a booster for flowering plants

Potato peelings contain plenty of nutrients that are excellent for plants. You can make an elixir from the skins that’s well worth the effort. How do you make it? All you need is water and potato skins. You’ll need 5 potatoes and a litre of water. Cut the skins into pieces and soak them in water. Bring the water to the boil, let it boil for a while, then strain it. Once it has cooled down, you can water your plants with it. They’ll bloom like mad.
