Fertilizing cucumbers with wood ash: simplicity is beautiful

Cucumbers

Who wouldn’t want to look forward to a bountiful cucumber harvest? Probably all of us. But it doesn’t always work out that way. Several traditional factors may be to blame. A classic example is relatively poor soil that lacks sufficient nutrients. In such cases, cucumbers don’t thrive and their yield is minimal. This problem can, of course, be prevented by fertilizing the plants. But we don’t necessarily have to use chemical fertilizers. Often, ordinary household materials are sufficient. Take wood ash, for example.

The type of wood is important

It’s not as simple as just using the ash that forms in a fire pit. However, the quality of the wood is key. You should choose natural, unvarnished wood. Construction debris has no place in the garden. Ash from hardwoods is ideal. Beech, oak, maple, or walnut are ideal. Ash from softwoods like spruce or birch contains only a small amount of minerals and nutrients. The fertilizer will therefore lack the necessary potency.

Wood ash can be applied in various ways

We’ll look at three methods in total.

Mixing ash into compost

Simply take a certain amount of crushed wood ash and mix it with compost. This helps lower the soil’s pH, and the plants get the organic matter they need. This mixture is ideal.

Spreading ash on the soil

In this case, use about 1 to 2 handfuls of wood ash per square meter. Spreading the ash also lowers the pH, which is excellent for cucumber growth.

A small amount of ash directly on the plants

The last effective alternative. Gently apply a small amount of ash to the cucumber plants. Be careful not to use too much ash, to prevent the plants from getting sunburned.

When to fertilize cucumbers with wood ash?

Feel free to do so right after transplanting the cucumber seedlings into the garden bed. Otherwise, you can also use ash on larger plants during flowering and fruiting.
