One of the most unpleasant diseases affecting fruit trees is pear rust. If we look at many gardens and orchards, we will find that it is very difficult to find pear trees that have not been affected by this disease. Just look at the leaves and it will usually be clear within a few seconds. Brownish and rust-colored spots are visible on them. It is possible to protect pear trees from rust. What does pear rust look like and what causes it?

If we look at the leaves of a pear tree in spring, we will probably find small brown spots on their upper side. These will grow larger over time until the entire leaf gradually dries out. This will also happen to other leaves. The tree will simply wither away, its vitality will be reduced to a minimum, which will also affect the tree’s fertility. We simply won’t see many fruits. Pear rust itself is caused by a fungus of the genus Gymnosporangium sabinae. This fungus is traditionally found on another tree, the common juniper. When infected with this fungus, its leaves typically develop an orange-colored jelly-like substance.

Prevention as a basis

Even before planting the tree itself, it is necessary to consider carefully whether the location makes sense. If there is juniper nearby, it is almost certain that pear rust will attack your tree. Pear rust is carried by the wind, so the juniper can even be a little further away. It can easily travel kilometers. The spores of the fungus that causes the disease are incredibly resistant and can survive even very severe frosts. Preventive measures are therefore ideal. These include, for example, spraying trees with a mixture of garlic and water. In the spring, it is sufficient to spray the trees several times. Onions or horsetail are also used. It is also very important to collect all old fruits and dispose of them.

Can the fruit of a diseased tree be eaten?

If the fruit is also infected, which can be recognized by hard, raised spots, do not consume it. It definitely does not belong in the compost either. Everything should be completely destroyed.
