Homemade fertilizer for orchids
These exotic beauties usually grow on windowsills and are extremely popular and rightly so, because they certainly attract attention. Many people will turn around to admire them. These brightly coloured flowers make us happy and many people worship them, literally. They may be great home decorations yes, but orchids require special care and you must provide it if you want them to grow beautiful and strong. Too often these beautiful plants wither and lose their flowers. Well, if that happens you should reach for a fertilizer that is effective. That is easy, right? But which fertilizer?
Homemade fertilizer made from yeast
Yeast contains mainly vitamin B, beta-glucans, plant-based hormones, magnesium, potassium and orchids love it. Yeast is also good for humans. Many women know that yeast improves skin and hair. These substances nourish roots which then absorb water and minerals better. They become more resistant to diseases and healthier which translates to stronger flowering and growth. You can make two types of yeast fertilizer. Both work great, but one is faster and the other is a bit slower.

”Slow” homemade fertilizer
Well, there is another option. You can go to a garden store and buy a fertilizer specifically designed for orchids. But we want you to save money and be environmentally friendly so, you are going to prepare your own fertilizer. A cube of yeast costs close to nothing. Here are the ingredients:
- 1 cube of yeast
- 500 ml of warm water
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- 4 litres of boiled water (you can also use rainwater)
Break the yeast to make crumbles, add sugar and half a litre of warm water. Wait until all ingredients have dissolved completely. Let the mixture sit for two hours. Now, add four litres of settled water or rainwater and mix thoroughly. Get a large bucket and pour the mixture in. Leave it in a warm room for one week. Mix it with settled water in 1:1 ratio before use.
”Quick” fertilizer
If you want to make quick fertilizer you need 1.5 cube of yeast and 1.5 litres of warm water. Break the yeast to make crumbles and add water. Stir well. Let it sit for about an hour. When done, get the orchid pot and soak it in the solution. You may increase the amount of fertilizer based on the number of plants you have. Remember that we do not water orchids we soak them.
