Madagascar jasmine

Madagascar jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda) is a beautiful and fragrant houseplant native to Madagascar. Princess Diana loved it. If you want to grow this delicate and beautiful flower in Europe, you can. Here are few tips how to grow it at home.

You should know that shoots can reach a length of up to 4.5 m. Madagascar jasmine has dark green and leathery leaves and produces small white flowers. The scent of flowers is pure delight because they release an intense and sweet fragrance, a bit reminiscent of lily of the valley or even jasmine. It is no wonder that these flowers were very popular and used often as floral decorations.

How to grow Madagascar jasmine

This plant usually blooms in summer and therefore likes pretty high temperatures. You need to winterize it of course, and you do that by moving it to a cooler room, where the temperature remains from 13-15 degrees Celsius. If you do that it will bloom even more during the next season. Madagascar jasmine does best in a sunny spot. but be careful with direct sunlight as strong sunlight may burn shoots and leaves. Do not move this plant or change the environment. It does not like moving so, choose the location carefully. Another thing Madagascar jasmine does not like is a sudden temperature change and drafts.

What about the soil? Regular soil with leafy matter and with slightly acidic pH (6-6.5) will do best. You should repot young plants every year or every 2 years, preferably in March or early April. Do not forget to create a thick permeable layer to ensure proper drainage. For example, use an expanded clay at the bottom of the pot. Older specimens do not need to be transplanted, just replace the top layer in the pot.

Water properly

Madagascar jasmine does not tolerate dry soil well. Make sure the soil is slightly moist at all time, especially during the flowering period. But as with any plants, the right balance between dry and wet must be observed. If the soil is to wet the plant will start losing leaves, flowers and buds. A good idea is to spray leaves with water during summer. Never use a leaf polish or similar products. Madagascar jasmine will not appreciate it! Limit watering in winter.
